Alexis Jones

from biologist to web developer

Looking back, I've always had a love for technology. In middle school, I would stay up all night changing up my MySpace code to make my page the cOoLeSt. Although, I didn't think coding could be anything more than just a fun hobby. At the time, my main focus was to work with great apes when I grew up.

I accomplished my goals of working with chimpanzees, and I spent 3 years of my life living out young Alexis' dreams. It was a life-changing, and unforgettable experience. As life progressed, my priorities and dreams shifted.

After traveling a winding road, I found the Future's Fund Coding Bootcamp. The minute I reentered the world of coding, I knew I found my next adventure. Currently, I spend my time working, building things for my cats, spending time with those I love, and coding.

This website is where you will find all of my dreams wrapped up into one webpage.

Biologist

As a biologist, I spent many years working outside in the hot Louisiana and Texas summers to remove invasive species, collect data, and restore habitats. Most notably, I was privileged enough to coordinate the management of 16 rescued chimpanzees for nearly 3 years. Working with chimpanzees taught me so much about myself, my work style, and about what I want in a work environment.

Some notable achievements of mine as a biologist include:

  • 2018 Helped integrate a new chimpanzee into an established group
  • 2018 Staff Helping Award
  • 2017 Implemented the usage of Microsoft Teams and OneDrive to help increase departmental communications, effectively improving the management and welfare of over 20 primate species.
  • 2016 Contributed to the advancement of captive Chimpanzee welfare by collecting data for the Chicago Zoological Society's WelfareTrak study
  • 2015 ExxonMobil Collegiate Conservation Program Intern
  • 2011 Howard Hughes Medical Institute Sea Phage Participant
  • Accepting a role at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge was a big star on the timeline that is my life. It marked the end of my work with chimpanzees (hopefully not forever!), and it destroyed everything I thought I knew about myself. It required moving back to the state that raised me, and the one I swore I'd never move back to. Luckily, I have grown so much in the short time I've been in Baton Rouge, at least it feels short (pandemic years don't count, right?). Moving into social work has allowed me to question who I thought I was as a person, while rebuilding a more socially aware person in it's place. I have gotten to spend time with all walks of life and be the biggest cheerleader to people accomplishing their goals. Some notable achievements of mine as a social worker include:

  • Ongoing Helped 17 low-income households acheive their dream of homeownership (and counting!)
  • 2019, 2020, 2021 Secured 300+ donated books for low-income families
  • 2021 Secured a 10K grant for a home build
  • 2020 Little Free Library Steward
  • 2019 Planned and executed a Homeowner Christmas Party for over 80 people with no prior experience
  • Social Worker

    Coder

As an amateur coder, I have built this very website you're reading through and countless other projects. Click the two buttons below to see some of my work. I enjoy practicing javascript and flexing my creative muscles in CSS. My long term goals include building 3D websites and working in web development professionally. But, as my career path has taught me, dreams and interests are fluid and I'm open to see where this hobby takes me!
